Video: 6th Sense & Apple Juice Kid Make A Beat

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

New York, NY (November 12, 2008) – Got this video featuring AJK and 6th Sense getting busy down in NC on the boards and such, shosheemi’ing up one of the three joints they did (yes, I used a word for sushi and turned it into a verb). Be on the look for more Camp Lo ish from Juice in the coming weeks!

For a special AJK remix to Ron Browz & Busta Rhymes’ “Pop Champagne + Barack Campaign (Kenyan Remix),” get over to KNOWxONE’s spot.  The history of how it came together is cool.  Ron Browz’s people hit Juice up off the strength of the NMC contest and asked him to flip a remix.  Being that Barack has Kenyan lineage… it only made sense.  Holler.

Video: Camp Lo Talks Production For New Music Cartel EP

Friday, October 31st, 2008

New York, NY (October 31, 2008) – Smokin Apples (Sonny Cheeba & The Apple Juice Kid) sat down with an anonymous cameraman (uh, sure sounds like Suede to me) and got into the production styles for the very fresh, very hip, NMC EP dropping November 5th. Juice talks samples and inspiration, and the duo also drop some science about who is helping produce their debut album, “A Piece of The Action.” Think Jay-Z and think “Reasonable Doubt.”

Exclusive: Interview With The Apple Juice Kid + Camp Lo Previews “Da Jaz”

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

New York, NY (October 30, 2008) – This footage is a little over a month old, but this is where the idea was conceived for the NMC + Camp Lo contest, so it’s appropriate it sees the light of day in the midst of this contest.

Here, Sonny Cheeba and The Apple Juice Kid, who, along with Ski Beats is helming most of Camp Lo’s new album, “A Piece of The Action,” chopped it up with us backstage at the AHH.com 10th Anniversary event/panel/gala. Juice talks here about his eight Scratch Beat Battle victories, working with 9th Wonder, how he linked up with Camp Lo, the benefits of organizations like Dynamic Producer and iStandard, hustling music and in general talking that producer slanguage. Suede also talks about being given demos at a wedding.

If you didn’t know, he and Cheeba have a production team they call Smoke N Apples (ha!) that actually co-produced two of the joints for this New Music Cartel EP, “Xclusive Zone” and “OnSmash.”

Interview: UK Producer Quincy Tones Talks Jay-Z, The DIY Approach

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

New York, NY (October 28, 2008) - If you ain’t familiar yet, you will be.  Quincey Tones (one of THE best producer names EVER) did the Pharrel-approved remix of Jay-Z’s “I Know,” which was followed by “God’s Gangster,” a mixtape featuring Hov and Nas.  In this interview with HipHopDX, Tones talks, among other things, his battle with cancer and how it pushed him forward, live instrumentation, UK hip-hop and some other dopeness:

DX: Being that you are from the UK has it proved difficult for you excel being that you are based in London?

Quincey Tones: Yeah, well ideally, I would like to be out there [in America] working with the artists, but I do what I can with an ocean between us in a production sense, apart from just making a beat. When I do work with an artist, I will spend a lot of time talking about concepts and we are constantly in conversation about where to take the track and they will send me rough versions of the vocals and I will do my thing that way. But there is nothing like just being in the studio with the artist, working with them that way. But hopefully it won’t be too long before I can get out there and start working with them.

DX: So that is the plan then?

Quincey Tones: Yeah, I mean I have never actually been to New York, but hopefully in the next six months or so I am hoping to go out there for at least a month or two and connect with all the people I have worked with in the past. Basically network and connect with new people, just get some work done.

DX: Listening to your music you definitely have that underground appeal that can easily cross over to the mainstream. You know even though you haven’t worked with Jay -Z we heard how good he sounded on one of your beats, is this the direction you are hoping to take where you can walk the line between both mainstream and underground?

Quincey Tones: Yes, but really I want to work with anyone who is good. I have done a lot of work with underground artists, people probably know me more for that but I think with the stuff I am doing I think I have stepped my game up massively in the last six months and no one has yet heard that as nothing has come out yet, but it will be coming out soon. There are going to be some bigger things coming out with bigger artists and I think you will hear a lot more versatility from me and get that I can work with an underground artist to a major label artist.
