Top Ten All-Time… Albums #3: Notorious B.I.G. – Ready To Die

In 1994, Notorious BIG lifted up the East Coast, put it on his back and changed hip hop forever. Ready To Die, his true gift to music, is stacked with radio hits and gets better as the album goes on. Mostly produced by Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs and Eazy Mo Bee, the beats go through old funk records and 80s hip hop samples.

Almost 15 years later, you can put the first single, “Juicy”, on in any club in America and everyone will know the words. Many of the great rappers of the past decade bite lines from this song on the regular. “Juicy” was the lead single but the true BIG introduction was in his 2nd single “Big Poppa”. Still one of the smoothest songs in Hip Hop history, it took BIG to the next level of national awareness. From there, the album is filled with classics from “Warning” to “The What” to “Unbelievable”. It’s rare to skip around tracks on this gem.

This is when hip-hop was at its best….it wasn’t about what you had, or what you bought…..it was strictly about hip-hop and who the best was…..when this albulm came out it changed hip-hop everywhere letting the rest of the hip hop nation know that they needed to step their game up…..biggie waz one of the best lyricist to ever grace the mic…..he could also hit the commercial scene without incriminating the image that he was putting off…..a lot of catz will switch their styles completely just to make it and that isn’t original….that’s why a lot of the rappers are in and out of the game so quick now because they lie to the rest of the world about who they really are…..that’s why biggie pac nas jada and the rest that don’t switch it to much will be around until hip hop completely dies…..even if they die their musik will still play because everyone has to have an example of what hip hop is really suppose to sound like…..you can fake talent in hip hop but you can’t fake greatness…..anyone can make a good song but it takes real talent to make an great CD……and that is what we are missing in hip hop……we have good artist….but only a few have the potential to be great and to be remembered after they are gone……stay up loud…

FAVORITE LINE’S FROM “EVRYDAY STRUGGLE” FROM MY FAVORITE JOINT OFF THAT ALBUM..

I know how it feels to wake up fucked up
Pockets broke as hell, another rock to sell
People look at you like you’s the user
Selling drugs to all the losers mad Buddha abuser
But they don’t know about the stress-filled day
Baby on the way mad bills to pay
    That’s why you drink Tanqueray
So you can reminisce and wish
You wasn’t living so devilish s-shit
I remember I was just like you
    Smoking blunts with my crew
    Flipping oldies 62’s
    ‘Cause G-E-D was it B-I-G, I got P-A-I-D
That’s why my mom hates me
She was forced to kick me out, no doubt
Then I figured out Nick’s went for twenty down south
Packed up my tools for my raw power move
Glock nineteen for casket and flower moves

I USED TO PLAY THAT JOINT OVER AND OVER IN MY LIL BROKEN ASS SONY WALKMAN.SITTIN ON THE 46 CITY BUS CUTTIN CLASS WHEN I WAS A YOUNGIN…”LET THE TAPE ROK TILL THE TAPE POP” RIGHT BIG.?

    DUE REMEMBER

    “UNBELIVEABLE”

    “ONE MORE CHANCE”

    “MACHINE GUN FUNK”

    &

If I wasn’t in the rap game
I’d probably have a key knee deep in the crack game
Because the streets is a short stop
Either you’re slingin crack rock or you got a wicked jumpshot
Shit, it’s hard being young from the slums
eatin five cent gums not knowin where your meals comin from
And now the shit’s gettin crazier and major
Kids younger than me, they got the Sky grand Pagers
    Goin outta town, blowin up
Six months later all the dead bodies showin up
It make me wanna grab the nine and the shottie
But I gotta go identify the body
Damn, what happened to the summertime cookouts?
Everytime I turn around a nigga gettin took out
Shit, my momma got cancer in her breast
Don’t ask me why I’m motherfuckin stressed, things done changed
